Loire Valley

Loire Valley

The Loire Valley, also known as the « Garden of France, » was the primary residence of the Kings of France during the Renaissance. Most of its monuments were designed or updated to reflect the tastes of the French Renaissance—a period when royal power was concentrated along the river and its tributaries.

The majority of these châteaux trace their origins back to the Middle Ages and retain the essential architectural features of that era. It is hardly surprising that the Loire Valley has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site; given the area’s wealth of remarkable monuments, this recognition is well-deserved.

The French Renaissance unfolded during the 15th and 16th centuries. The art of the French château—along with disciplines such as music and painting—emerged under strong Italian influence. Eager to establish France as a major international power, French kings, beginning with Francis I, invited renowned figures to the kingdom, including the legendary Leonardo da Vinci.

France boasts an exceptional historical past and 45,000 castles, nearly 11,000 of which are listed as Historical Monuments.

The Loire Valley is a particularly special region, home to 103 castles, many of which were once royal residences.
